Category: Pro 1,2 Distance: 15 Miles BMC Racers: Scott Barnes Riders: 65 Weather: 80 Degrees Wind: 5 - 10 mph
Course: This is a difficult 15 mile time trial. This course includes 2 laps on the north Granville road course. The course had a lot of rollers and some gradual climbs. The roads were not that great and the four corners were a little sketchy because of the gravel.
Summary: The start order of the Time Trial was the reverse order of the G.C. so the first rider went off at 5:00 and I started at 5:41. There was a minute between each rider. My first lap, I turned in a...

Category: Pro 1,2 Distance: 58 Miles BMC Racers: Scott Barnes Riders: 68 Weather: 80-82 Degrees Wind: 10 – 15 mph
Course: A 58 Mile race on a rolling to hilly course in Perry County. Expect a lot of good climbs and two covered bridges making for a great break-away course. Time gaps could be gained by enterprising riders on the finishing circuits. There is a big up-hill finish this year, no more sprint finish.
Summary: There was a 15 man break-away that got away in the first two miles and another 5 riders bridged up to them making a total of 20 riders. The bad thing was that all of the big teams had representation...

Category: Pro 1,2 Distance: 50 Miles BMC Racers: Scott Barnes Riders: 72 Weather: 80's Wind: 10-15 mph
Course: Gambier Circuit Race , Gambier, OH - This is a 50M circuit race. This course offers two hills each lap, Baker Hill, 1/2 mile @ 7 percent, and Gambier Hill, 1/3 mile @ 7-10 percent
Summary: To my dismay, there were more Pro’s at this race than I had anticipated. I already knew Toyota United was coming and I was glad to see only four of them (Joshua Thorton, Sterling Magnell, Bobby Lea, and Derek Wilkerson). However...

Category: Pro 1,2 Distance: 27 Laps BMC Racers: Steve Grife Riders: 13 Weather: 80's and sunny (perfect) Wind: Non-factor
Course: The crit course is layed out on the Pittsburgh State University campus. It is a combination of wide open streets, parking lots, a narrow winding alley and a long gradual climb before the last corner. Pretty cool actually.
Summary: I really like the PSU course so I was expecting to have fun but also suffer a little...

|
Category: Pro 1,2 Distance: 94 Miles BMC Racers: Scott Barnes Riders: 6 Weather: 80's Wind: NNE about 10 mph
Course: A 21K / 13 mile circuit w/some rollers and a 500 meter long climb just before the finish line. There were approx. 109 meters gained each lap.
Summary: Since their were only 6 Cat 1,2 riders, they combined the Cat 1,2 and Cat 3 fields even though we were scored separately. The 6 Cat 1,2 represented 6 different teams which was a good thing since I was the only BMC rider...

Cat 5 Missouri State RR

The state road race was held in Columbia, MO on an 11 mile loop of constantly rolling terrian. the Cat 5's would do 3 laps and we're broke into two groups under 30 and 30 and over. I was in the 30 and over group that was full at 50 riders. There was strong team representation from Bid Shark, Bicycle Shack, KC Bike, and Ghisallo. With all the large teams I figured that there would be alot of break away attemps. However after one lap our group caught the under 30 5's and our pace car neutralized our field. I'm not sure if the pace car or the teams are the reason that no attack happened but the entire pack stayed to gether for the finish. I had bad position and tried to come around early to get better position but just had to much distance to get to the front. When I realized that a top 10 wasn't going to happen I sat up and rolled through the finish. I guess that's why the more races that your in the more you learn. My plan was to sit at the back and wait for the attacks to spread thing out which would have made it easier to move up then when the stronger riders began to attack to try and get into a break. obviosly this didn't happen and I should have tried to more up and attack on my own on the second or last lap.

Cat 1,2 - Arkansas State TT Championship

The Arkansas State TT is held every year in Galloway, AR which is a little past Little Rock. The 24.8 mile course is board flat and is an out and back course. The one thing that everyone complains about on this course are the cracks in the road which seem to be on about 18 miles of the course and about every 100 yards. TT's are all about getting into a rhythm and with all of the cracks it is almost impossible. I've done this course for the past 3 years and one thing that is always different is the wind. This year we had a 4-6 mph tailwind on the wayout out and a 4-6 mph headwind on the way back. Just to give you an ideal of how this affects the out time vs. the back time. I did a 27:08 on the way out and a 29:03 on the way back. The race had a good turn out of about 70 riders.
The results in the Cat 1,2 field were Scott Barnes took 3rd place overall with a time of 56:11, Steve Grife took second place with a time of 56:08, and Hunter East had a time of 53:36 for first place.

Northwest Arkansas Challenge

Approximately 40 riders started from the parking lot of the Mercy Fitness Center in Ft. Smith this morning. Organizer Carl Norris said that several more will join us in the upcoming days and many more for the weekend. We did 80 miles from Ft. Smith to Russellville today. The weather was a break in the heat as there was a cloud cover all day. A little mist and small rain in the 1st 5 miles but it turned dry thereafter. A slight head wind did little to slow down the pace. A SAG stop in Charleston and a lunch break in Paris kept the group together. Only the thought of the ride tomorrow deterred the racing efforts of most riders. Tomorrow we will climb up Hwy 7 to Jasper for lunch and then into Harrison (83 miles). Todays ride offered a good shoulder yet a fair amount of traffic. Tomorrow, it is reported to not have much of a shoulder and still fair traffic. Looks like a break in the weather again but promises to have head winds of 5-10.
Our group was a real mix of abilities and ages. I counted 5 women. I would guess the age average to be in the mid-40's. Riders from Jonesboro, Memphis, Oklahoma...I was the only one from the Bentonville area and the only BMC rider. Several Tyson riders and several Tri-Sport riders from Fayetteville showed their colors. If you want to join us, we will be at the Comfort Inn Fayetteville on the South side of town. Most of the rides are starting a 8 am. The one in Fayetteville will take us to the Fittness Center in FT Smith with showers at the end.
It is nice to have a SAG wagon looking after everyone and setting up a break for refreshments. A Cargo van is taking the luggage, and the Mercy Team Van is sweeping up. So far good support and planning. Neal Picken
