Masters 45+ - Bob Herbert SR

Even though we had a small field it was a tough race none the less. I was able to win the time trial on Saturday morning by a mere 8 seconds. For the Saturday afternoon circuit race our strategy was simple, let my team mate Tony Childs attack & I would mark the guy in second place. We tried this but the second place rider was able to win the stage and I finished second behind him. I now had a scant one second lead going into the Sunday road race. In the road race Tony attacked again a few times until the second place rider, myself, and another rider broke away with a couple of laps to go. We road hard to the finish approach when he (the second place rider) jumped a bit early. I was able to get on his wheel and beat him to the line by a couple of bike lengths. For an old guy it felt pretty good to win my first race in a long, long time.

Racing is fun. Fun is a relative term so I guess I am safe in saying that most of you racers would have a hard time in seeing fun doing what I am doing. I would say that racing is relative also. This weekend I raced and had fun. All of you like to see improvements...

Category: Pro 1,2 Distance: 48 Miles BMC Racers: Scott Barnes, Scott Walnofer, Tim Tobbe, Mike Stewart, and Steve Grife Riders: 16 Weather: 70’s Wind: 10 mph
Course: A 4.4 mile circuit with demanding hills and challenging turns, the course begins with a 3/4 mile climb, winds around and over some steep and rolling terrain, and finishes on a long, fast, gradual downhill.
Summary: The race had 5 Mercy riders, 5 BMC riders, 3 Compliance Depot riders, one Junior, and a couple of other teams I didn’t recognize. It didn’t take long for Mercy to start attacking and we were able to cover the first 5 or so, but…

Category: Pro 1,2 Distance: 88 Miles BMC Racers: Scott Barnes and Scott Walnofer Riders: 80+ Weather: 40’s Wind: 15-20 mph
Course: This course was awesome. It was 22 miles per lap and it only had two short climbs, but what made the course so fun was the very narrow twisting farm roads that were laden with potholes and gravel. Each lap there was also a mile or so of old brick streets that truly gave it a Belgium feel. What made the race challenging other than all of the pros that showed up was the wind. Because the course was so twisty, you would go from head wind sections to crosswind to tailwind sections all in a matter of minutes and if you were in the wrong spot you could easily get dropped.
Summary: The studs of the race were the full squad of...

Breakthrough Sports Drink

Elite cyclists who drank chocolate milk in breaks cycled longer than those who drank Endurox R4 and about equally as long as those who drank Gatorade in a study backed by the dairy industry. One little milk study and everyone's having a cow. For decades, biochemists and physiologists in the dog-eat-dog world of sports drink technology have struggled to find the perfect elixir - the right balance of carbohydrates, electrolytes, protein and fluid to keep athletes in peak form. So it was big news when exercise kinesiology professor Joel Stager and co-workers at Indiana University in Bloomington declared they had stumbled upon the perfect drink for elite cyclists recovering their energy after strenuous exercise.
That beverage was...

|
Category: Pro 1,2 Distance: 69 Miles BMC Racers: Scott Barnes, Scott Walnofer, Tim Tobbe, Steve Grife Riders: About 15 Weather: 75-80 Wind: SW 15-20 mph
Course: I would say it is a more Flat than rolling 23mi course that starts and finishes in Prairie Grove. The course has some scenic views of Lake Wedington and other than one two minute climb that could cause breaks in the peleton; it is a pretty flat course.
Summary: There was one pro at the race and that was first year professional Brian Jenson of Jelly Belly. The other teams represented was Mercy, BMC, and Carve/Memphis Motorwerks. Carve/Werks put in some early attacks...

Master 35+ and Junior 10-12 - Flint Ridge CR
By @ 2:28 PM :: 185 Views ::

|
Category: Master 35+, Junior 10-12 Distance: 20 Miles, 5 miles BMC Racers: Bill Sowers, Addison Sowers Riders: 5 (race combined with 11 master 45+ riders), 3 (in 10-12) Weather: 70 Degrees Wind: Non Factor
Course: The Flint Ridge course is in a gated retirement community so you could basically use the whole road. It is 4.5 mile per lap and there is not really a flat part on the course. The course was primarily rolling with a steep climb before the finish line each lap and then after the finish line there are two short, but grinding hills. The other part of the course that is unique is the fast technical downhill section. After the fast downhill section that is pretty bumpy, there is a very sharp left hand turn followed by a sharp right hand turn and then you hit the steep hill before the finish line. You can’t carry much speed going into the climb because of the sharp right hander so the climb is deceivingly tough.
Summary: There were 16 of us that started the master 35/45+ race. With the payouts and categories split, I just had to worry about the 35+ racers...
