Intensity vs. Endurance During Indoor Cycling

November is a painful transition month for most riders in the northern hemisphere. Unless you live in a warm climate, you’ll probably be getting much of your cycling fix on an indoor trainer for several months. And the proper approach to riding the cylindrical road is controversial.

Some training experts say to establish 8-12 weeks of base mileage at low intensity. Fine, but then they tell us to ride a trainer if the weather is bad, and they advise going hard because it's too boring to do long, slow indoor rides.

Sure it's tedious to spend hours on the trainer at a low heart rate, but how much hard effort can we do without jeopardizing our aerobic base? Conventional training wisdom says the hard stuff is supposed to come later...
